A practical guide
Why your sofa still looks grey after you hoover
And a ten-minute routine that actually lifts the fur, fabric by fabric.
You've hoovered. Twice. The cushions look fine from the doorway, then you sit down in black jeans and stand up wearing half the dog. The doorbell goes in ten minutes, and the sofa is still wearing a fur coat.
It isn't you, and it isn't your hoover being rubbish. Pet hair behaves differently from dust, and once you know why, it gets a lot easier to shift.
Why it happens
Fur doesn't sit on the sofa. It hangs on to it.
- It clings. Rubbing fabric builds up static, and fine pet hair is drawn to it like a magnet. Synthetic fabrics, the ones most sofas are made of, are the worst for it.
- It works its way in. Every time your pet settles, loose hairs get pushed and twisted into the weave. A hoover is great at lifting what's loose, but suction alone struggles to pull out what's woven in.
- The lint roller only skims. It grabs the top layer, fills up in a few passes, and leaves you with a bin full of sticky sheets.
So the trick isn't more suction. It's something that grips the hair and drags it out of the weave.

The free trick
Try this before you buy anything
Put on a rubber washing-up glove, dampen it slightly under the tap, shake off the drops, and stroke the sofa in one direction. The rubber grips the fibres and the hair rolls up into clumps you can pick off. Ideal Home and the American Kennel Club both recommend it, and it costs nothing.
The catch: use too much water and you'll mark the sofa or leave it damp; the fur ends up stuck to the glove and your sink; and doing a whole three-seater by hand gets tiring. It's brilliant for a quick fix, less so as a weekly routine.
The routine
Ten minutes, once a week, fabric by fabric
Sofa (5 minutes). Take the seat cushions off. Short strokes, always in the same direction, so the fur gathers instead of being pushed around. Do the seams and the sides, where it collects most.
Bed and throws (2 minutes). Sweep them before they go in the wash. The less fur that goes into the machine, the less ends up back on your clean clothes.
Coat by the door (30 seconds). A couple of strokes down the front before you leave, not on the train.
Car seats (2 minutes). Same short strokes. Fabric seats hold on to fur even more than sofas.
Patio door (when you notice). Nose prints come off with a squeegee and a little water.
In spring and autumn, when pets shed their coats, do it twice a week.
Honestly
What each tool is actually good at
| Tool | Good at | Not so good at |
|---|---|---|
| Hoover | Floors, crumbs, loose fur on top | Hair woven into upholstery |
| Lint roller | A quick tidy of your clothes | Sofas and beds; it needs new rolls |
| Damp rubber glove | A free quick fix | Large areas; it's wet and messy |
| A fur wiper | Sofas, beds, throws, coats, glass | Deep-pile carpet (a carpet rake does better) |
Most homes with a pet end up using two of these: a hoover for the floors, and one tool for the fabric.

Where Meoggy fits
The rubber-glove trick, without the water.
We made the Fur Wiper for that weekly ten minutes. Its two-tone fabric head grips the fur and gathers it as you sweep, so it comes off in one strip instead of drifting around. A small brush tucked behind the fabric cleans the head straight into the bin, the end of the handle is a lint brush for your coat, and the rubber edge does the patio door.
To be straight with you: for fur deep in a thick carpet, a carpet rake will do more. The Fur Wiper is for everything you sit on, sleep on and wear.
