Best Pet Hair Remover in the UK: Which Tool for Which Surface

Best Pet Hair Remover in the UK: Which Tool for Which Surface

Search for the best pet hair remover and you'll find hundreds of gadgets, each claiming to be the one. The honest answer is that there isn't one tool that does everything well. Fur on a black coat, fur woven into a rug and fur stuck in the washing machine are three different problems.

Here's what each type of tool is actually good at, including the ones we don't sell.

What is the best pet hair remover in the UK?

Where the fur is Best type of tool Why
Clothes Reusable lint brush Fast, gentle, no sticky sheets to replace
Sofa and bed Fabric fur brush or rubber-edged tool Grips hair in the weave and gathers it into one strip
Carpets and rugs Pet hair rake or carpet brush, then the hoover Drags out hair that suction leaves wound round the fibres
Car seats Handheld rake or rubber brush Tight weaves need something that grips, not just suction
The pet Grooming glove or deshedding brush Catches loose hair before it reaches the house
The washing Machine maintenance, not a gadget Hair waits in the seal and filter, then lands on the next load
A tabby cat sniffing pet hair tools laid out on a grey sofa

Which pet hair remover works on which surface?

Sticky lint rollers

Good at: a quick tidy of your clothes before you leave. Not so good at: sofas and carpets, where they fill up in a few strokes and only grab the top layer. Over a year, the refills add up and go straight in the bin.

Reusable lint brushes

Good at: clothes, cushions and bedding, with nothing to throw away. Not so good at: deep carpet pile. Look for one you can clean easily, or the brush ends up wearing the fur instead.

Rubber brooms, squeegees and rubber gloves

Good at: gathering hair on carpets and upholstery into piles, which is why Hill's Pet suggests a rubber-bristled broom for carpet fibres. A slightly damp rubber washing-up glove is the best free trick there is. Not so good at: large areas on your knees, and too much water can mark fabric.

Pet hair rakes and carpet brushes

Good at: the grey haze woven into carpets, rugs and car seats that the hoover leaves behind. Not so good at: delicate fabrics, knitwear and very deep shag rugs. Use short strokes in one direction and test velvet on a hidden patch.

Electrostatic rollers

Good at: sofas and beds, rolling back and forth to collect hair into a built-in chamber. Not so good at: clothes on the go and car footwells, where they can be awkward to use.

Hoovers with pet attachments

Good at: floors, crumbs, dust and loose hair on top. Essential, and nothing here replaces one. Not so good at: hair wound into upholstery and carpet, which needs to be pulled rather than sucked. Rake first, hoover second.

Grooming gloves and deshedding brushes

Good at: the source. Every hair you brush off your pet is one that won't end up on the sofa. Gloves suit nervous pets who hate brushes; deshedding brushes suit heavy, double-coated shedders. See deshedding glove vs brush.

What do most UK pet owners end up using?

  1. Brush the pet once or twice a week, more during the spring and autumn moult.
  2. Rake the carpet and the sofa, then hoover.
  3. A lint brush by the front door for coats.
  4. An empty hot wash once a month, plus a wipe of the seal and filter.

Which Meoggy tool helps?

We sell three of the tool types above, and we'd rather you bought the right one than all of them. The All-Surface Tool is a rake for carpets, rugs and car seats. The Fur Wiper is a reusable lint brush for clothes, sofas and beds. The Cuddle Glove is for the pet. The Fur-Free Home Kit puts the three together. Each comes with 30 days to try it at home: if it doesn't work for you, we refund you in full, and you don't need to send it back.

Questions people ask

What do UK pet owners search for most?

In our year of UK search data, "pet hair remover" was searched about 1,900 times a month and "pet hair remover glove" about 1,300. When people named a place, the washing machine (about 1,010) and the car (about 810) came well ahead of the sofa.

Are reusable pet hair rollers worth it?

They're good on sofas, beds and clothes and save buying sticky refills. Reviewers note they cover a small area per pass, so they're slower on big carpets.

Do pet hair removers work on carpet?

Rubber rakes and carpet brushes do, because they pull embedded hair out of the pile. Rollers and lint brushes are better on upholstery and clothes.

Is a pet hoover enough on its own?

A good hoover picks up loose hair but often leaves hair woven into fabric. Most homes with pets end up using a hoover plus one or two hand tools.
