Reusable Lint Roller vs Sticky Lint Roller: Which Is Better for Pet Hair?

Reusable Lint Roller vs Sticky Lint Roller: Which Is Better for Pet Hair?

You're halfway out of the door, and your black coat looks like it's been hugged by the dog. Because it has. So you reach for the lint roller, peel off another sheet, and roll. Tomorrow you'll do it again. That's the real question behind "reusable or sticky": not which one works, but which one you want to be using every single day.

What's the difference between reusable and sticky lint rollers?

Sticky lint rollers

A roll of adhesive paper. Each sheet grabs hair until it's full, then you tear it off and start a new one.

  • Good at: speed on clothes, especially fine knits like wool and cashmere. Easy to keep in a bag or a car.
  • Not so good at: big areas. A sofa cushion can use up several sheets, and the sticky surface only grabs what's on top of the fabric.
  • The catch: you keep buying refills, and every used sheet goes in the bin. In a home with a shedding dog or cat, that's every day.

Reusable lint rollers and lint brushes

There are two kinds. Gel rollers have a tacky surface you rinse under the tap. Fabric lint brushes use a directional fabric that drags hair up out of the weave, which you then brush or tip into the bin.

  • Good at: daily use on clothes, cushions, throws and beds. Nothing to run out of.
  • Not so good at: very fine knits, where a sticky sheet can be gentler and quicker. Gel rollers also lose grip until they're rinsed and dried.
  • The catch: you pay a little more once, and you need to clean it now and then.

Which lint roller is best for which job?

Job Better choice
Dog hair on your coat before work Reusable lint brush (or a sticky roller in your bag)
Cashmere or fine wool Sticky roller, gently
Sofa cushions and throws Reusable lint brush, short strokes in one direction
The bed and the duvet Reusable lint brush with a long handle
Carpet, rugs, car seats Neither: a rubber pet hair rake pulls out what rollers miss
The pet itself Neither: a grooming glove or brush

Is a reusable lint roller cheaper in the long run?

A sticky roller looks cheaper on the shelf. The difference is that you're not buying it once. If you go through a refill every week or two, a reusable tool usually pays for itself within a few months, and it keeps a steady pile of used sheets out of the bin. If you only roll your coat before the odd wedding, a sticky roller is fine.

How do you use a reusable lint roller properly?

  1. Short strokes, one direction. Going back and forth just moves the hair around.
  2. Clean it as you go. A full head stops picking up. Brush or rinse it clean, then carry on.
  3. Do the pet first. Five minutes with a glove or brush means less hair landing on your clothes at all. Here's a simple weekly routine.
  4. Before the wash, not after. Take the loose hair off first, then wash. More in how to remove dog hair from clothes.

Which Meoggy tool helps?

Our Fur Wiper is a reusable lint brush on a long handle: a washable fabric head for the sofa, the bed and throws, a small brush tucked behind it that cleans the head straight into the bin, a lint brush on the end of the handle for your coat, and a rubber edge for nose prints on the patio door. It isn't for carpets or for brushing your pet: for those, there's the All-Surface Tool and the Cuddle Glove. Every tool comes with 30 days to try it at home.

Questions people ask

Do reusable lint rollers really work on pet hair?

Yes, on clothes, cushions and bedding. They work best in short strokes in one direction. On hair woven deep into carpet or car seats, a rubber rake does a better job.

How do you clean a reusable lint roller?

Sticky-gel types are rinsed under the tap and left to dry. Fabric lint brushes are brushed clean or emptied into the bin. Either way, there's nothing to throw away but the hair.

Is a reusable lint roller better for the environment?

It avoids a steady stream of used sticky sheets going to landfill, so for daily use it's the lower-waste choice.

Why do lint roller searches double in January?

Our UK search data shows lint roller searches jump from about 31,000 to about 67,000 a month in January. The data can't tell us why, but it happens right after the Christmas jumpers come out.
